Under the Shelling: Digital 3D Protection of the Ukrainian Bronze Age
The main objective of the project "Under the Shelling: Digital 3D Protection of the Ukrainian Bronze Age" was to digitally preserve Bronze Age artifacts from the collections of the largest university archaeological museum in Ukraine - the Archaeological Museum of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Historically, university archaeological museums in Ukraine have not been open to the general public, serving primarily as storehouses for expedition collections and learning centers for students.
Established in 1987, the Archaeological Museum of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv holds approximately 30,000 artifacts from across Ukraine. This collection is particularly notable for its rich assembly of Bronze Age items, many of which were unearthed during fieldwork in the latter half of the 20th century. These artifacts provide invaluable insights into the Yamna, Catakomb, and Zrubna cultures.
Our project received crucial support and funding through a Research Scholarship from the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). This generous grant enabled us to meticulously preserve these significant historical treasures digitally. We are profoundly grateful for this support, which has been instrumental in achieving our project's aims.
Through our dedicated efforts, we have digitally preserved 66 artifacts and created detailed 3D models of these items. This project has resulted in the largest digitized dataset of Katakombna culture artifacts ever captured in 3D, introducing a comprehensive collection of ceramic production from the Middle Bronze Age of the Ukrainian Steppe.
